My mother insisted on washing up and roped Gabriel and Jude into helping her so I could go show Anja the workshop right this second. Anja had agreed politely, and I figured there was no harm in it, so I nodded.

The sun had just gone down, and the wind was picking up as we crossed the frozen yard, the icy gusts making me shiver. I glanced over at the thin sweater she was wearing. “You gonna be ok in just that? We have coats you can borrow if you want.”

“I’m fine,” she said, sounding amused. “Dragons don’t get cold.”

I recalled she had been wandering around in a short-sleeved dress this whole time without complaint. “Must be nice. Bears sure do.”

She reached up and touched my cheek, and I jumped at the light brush of her fingertips and how warm they were. She grinned. “You are cold.”

“And you are warm,” I countered, embarrassed to have reacted the way I had. I was an Alpha, dammit, not some blushing cub. I pulled my coat tighter around me and marched on toward the workshop. She kept pace beside me, still smiling slightly.

The workshop was built like a garage, with three solid walls and a fourth that could be rolled up to let in the fresh air. It was a purely functional space, nothing fancy, but I always loved going out there. Lots of good memories, even if some of them were a little sad now. I snapped open the padlock and pulled the door up with a metallic clatter, then reached over and turned on the light.

Anja stepped inside, and I followed silently, keeping my distance. The scent of raw wood washed over me, a fragrance that always reminded me of my father. The workshop was crammed with machinery, lumber, and furniture in various stages of completion, but there was an order to it if you knew what to look for. It was a space that was designed well for its purpose. Anja wandered over to inspect a rocking chair, giving the curved base a gentle nudge with her foot and setting it into motion. “Pretty,” she said.

Seeing the chair reminded me of something I had been meaning to say. “By the way, thank you.”

She looked up at me, frowning slightly. “For what?”

“For thinking so quick when my mother asked what you were doing here. I know we hadn’t agreed on a cover story, but I guess we didn’t have to. It was kind of you.”

“I can see how much you love Tara,” she said quietly, gazing down at the chair. “All of you. And she’s so kind. I didn’t want to hurt her.”

“She’s like her old self again,” I said, then wished I hadn’t. It wasn’t any of her business.

Anja glanced up at me. “What do you mean?”

She looked genuinely worried, and I gave in to the urge to tell her the truth. “Ever since my father passed, she took to her bed. She was always so strong, but it’s like she got old overnight.
